This is Sage

Sage or Salvia Officinalis is a perennial herb. It is a member of the mint family and native of the Mediterranean region. It has a long history of cultural and medicinal use. It should be stated that is not the same as White Sage. The Salvia Officinalis is green of colour and edible, but can also be used for cleansing. White Sage or Salvia Apiana can be found in southwestern America and north-western Mexico.

White Sage VS Sage for Smudging

White Sage and Sage are not so different from each other. White Sage is burned with the belief that the incense banishes negative thoughts, spirits, dreams, and illnesses. Regular sage is mostly used for medicinal purposes. It is believed that it can be used to treat throat, mouth and skin ailments. Use whatever suits your needs.

What is Smudging?

‘Smudging’ is the term used for the practice of burning sage. There are various reasons why a person would take up smudging, but common reasons include: the cleansing of a space or aura, to perform rituals, banishing ghosts, or banishing negative energy. Not only does sage have spiritual meanings, but it is also used by indigenous peoples to help cure various kinds of medical issues. It is believed that sage can be antimicrobial and antibacterial. It is also said to release Negative Ions, like with Salt Lamps. If you want to go smudging, the best sage for the purpose is dried white sage.

Sage Smudge Meaning

Burning Sage or White Sage Smudge has been used by Native Americans and other indigenous peoples as a part of their spiritual practice. According to these Natives, when the dried sage is lit, the sacred smokes could potentially help with healing and cleansing the body, mind, and space. Nowadays it is used by New Age movements for spiritual purposes or so-called Smudging Rituals, for example during a Full Moon. These people don’t always use Sage, but also Palo Santo Sticks, or a combination of both. However, Palo Santo is not sustainable. White Sage Smudge Sticks are for customary use with sometimes a combination of herbs and flowers.

How to Smudge with Sage

During smudging it is advised to guide the smoke towards the object that you want to cleanse. You can direct the smoke with a feather or your hands. Crystals can also be cleansed with sage. Place them near the smoke or hold the crystals in the smoke for as long as your intuition tells you to. It is believed that this could remove the negative energy in the crystals. Crystals can be recharged in direct Full Moonlight.

How To Make A Sage Smudge Stick

The making of Sage Smudge Sticks is fairly easy. First, choose the desired dried herbs. Think of sage, lavender, thyme, marigold, rosemary, and rose petals. Secondly, place the herbs alternately, so that the stick is equally thick on both sides. Thirdly, lay the wire parallel to the herbs and leave the beginning protruding four centimetres so that it can be used later to tie the wire. Twist the wire gently but tightly around the bundle. Easy peasy!

How to Properly Smudge a House with Sage

How do you smudge a house with sage? There are two ways to cleanse a house with white sage: you can choose to cleanse your whole house or you can choose to only cleanse the room in which new, fresh energy is desired. If you just moved into a new place, it is advised to cleanse the whole house. However, after a gathering for example, you may just want to cleanse the living room. Every method requires different smudge needs. Below is a brief explanation:

  • Walking while cleansing the house
  • Leaving White Sage in a room

Walking while Cleansing the House

You can walk through the whole house with a Smudge Stick. This is a bundle of dried herbs. Are you wondering how to use a smudge stick? It is very similar to using White Sage. Light the Smudge Stick and let it smoke. It is recommended to hold the Smudge Stick in one hand and an Abalone Shell to catch the ashes in the other.

Putting White Sage in a Room

Putting White Sage in a room can be done with an Abalone Shell. Place the Smudge Stick in the shell and let it smoulder for a while. However, make sure to use a stick that fits in the shell. Please note: White Sage has a strong fragrance once lit. In this case, less is more.

What To Say When Smudging A House

It is a common practice to utter a smudging prayer or chant during a cleansing ritual, because it is believed to help eliminate the negative or stagnant energy in a home. The commonly used chants are all meant to invite positivity into your home or space. It essentially means making a wish for every room. Below is an example of a chant:
